Q & A with Brandon:
Q: What attracted you to accounting and consulting?
I took 1-1/2 years of accounting classes in high school and found that I excelled, so it only seemed natural that I continue to pursue this area of study while attending Fresno State. At the college level, accounting continued to feel like a natural fit and I never wavered from that path.
Q: Do you have any words of wisdom for up-and-coming accountants?
One tactic I used to increase my value when first starting out in this field was to volunteer my services. I remember being an intern and at the end of my scheduled hours I would roam the hallways looking for any additional projects I could work on. This eventually led to real world training oppor-tunities that I don't believe would normally have been presented to someone so new to the accounting field.
Q: What makes working with Torosian & Walter different than other work experiences?
The partners provide the freedom to develop solutions without involving rigid protocol issues. Additionally, we never stop looking for ways to improve workflow and other processes that are crucial to staying on the leading edge of our industry. I should also include here the use of technology to create efficien-cies and solutions as some-thing that drew me to this company and remains an extremely appealing aspect of working at Torosian & Walter.

personal...
Q: What was the last book you read?
The Leadership Challenge
by James M Kouzes & Barry Z Posner
What I enjoyed about this book is the idea that leadership is a skill that can be mastered by anyone with the desire to become an effective leader and not some mythical gift bestowed upon a chosen few.
Q: What are your outside interests?
Anything to do with technology and gardening. After long sessions on my Twitter, Facebook, Linked-in and following all of my favorite industry Blogs and RSS feeds online, I find that gardening acts as a great counterbalance to the impending technology overload.
Q: You, an empty tropical island and (fill in the blank)...
Several books loaded on my Kindle, a strong wireless internet connection, my laptop, an Xbox & PS3 complete with my favorite games and a big screen monitor. I'm not quite sure if this much technology goes against the spirit of the question, but it sounds ideal to me. Oh, don't forget the on-call meals being dropped off on my tropical island three times a day!
