Q & A with Matt:

Q:  What is it about accounting and consulting that first drew your interest?

Initially I had convinced myself as a student in the Craig School of Business at CSU Fresno, that private accounting was the career for me. The problem was that I didn't know which industry to "dive" into. Public accounting offered me a chance to gain exposure to many different industries and business types. It has been really exciting to work with different clients and help them face the challenges associated with that particular industry. I definitely made the right decision!

Q:  Do you have any words of wisdom for up-and-coming accountants?

Don't be afraid to ask questions. You have to enter your career as an accountant with a willingness to learn. The worst attitude you can have is to think you have it all figured out. Aside from reading industry specific literature, it is important to tap into the knowledge within your own firm. This of course is the experienced staff and CPAs. If your firm is anything like Torosian & Walter than these people will be more than willing to help you learn!

Q:  What makes working with Torosian & Walter different than other work experiences?

Torosian & Walter is com-mitted to remaining on the cutting edge of technology. This is unusual for most businesses because often times technology draws the short straw when it comes to company resources. This has been true of other places I have worked. As someone who is passionate about technology I have witnessed time and time again how our commitment to advanced technology within the firm as translated to better service for our clients.

Q:  Where did you grow up? What was it like then or how has it changed?

I grew up right here in good old Fresno, CA! I think Fresno has worked hard (and is continuing to work) to become a dynamic metropolitan city. It is a great place to raise a family, and there is definitely plenty to do to keep your free time occupied.

Q:  What are your outside interests?

I love technology! I have built many computers over the years for friends and family. (Even ones with water cooling systems!) I enjoy video games, computer programming, and learning new and exciting ways to break and fix my computer!

I also enjoy cycling and playing the occasional tennis match and I recently joined a local boxing gym, which has turned out to be a lot of fun, and a really good workout!

Q:  Other than the present, which historical era would you like to have lived in? Why?

This is a really tough one for me, because no other period in history had iPads and HDTV, but I would really like to have been alive during the founding of the United States. I would like to have met many of the founding fathers, and see how they would feel about the state of the United States today. I would be curious to see if it has turned out how they expected.
